ICCS: Investigative Journalism

The 10th Big EdukCircle Convention on Media Communication: Exploring the Landscape of Investigative Journalism. Last September 01, 2013 we attended the ICCS convention, it was my first time to attend such event. When I think of "investigative journalism" my first thought goes to undercover investigation or something like in the movies. Based on Wikipedia "Investigative journalism is a form of journalism in which reporters deeply investigate a single topic of interest, often involving crime, political corruption, or corporate wrong doing". The way I understand it, its a way to know deeper a certain topic like crime, political issues, or wrong doings. Its sound interesting because when I think of it I feel like Sherlock Holmes. Investigative Journalism can be put into documentaries also called as ID or Investigative Documentaries. Philippines has an organization called " Philippine Center for Investigative Journalisma non-profit media organization specializing in investigative journalism based in Quezon CityPhilippines. Established in 1989 by nine Filipino journalists, the organization funds investigative projects for both the print and broadcast media and has published over 400 articles in Philippine newspapers and magazines, produced documentaries and published books on current issues. Now that we know What "Investigative Journalism" is, I can now tell you what happen to our ICCS Convention.

It started  morning around 9:00am or so. Most of us haven't ate breakfast though we ate snacks along the way. The First Speaker was
Marites Danguilan Vitug an editor-at-large, Newsbreak. Her topic was Risks and Ethics. She said in her PPT that "Journalism should make the public understand that bribes are a no-no" and "Editors should be very strict in observing and implementing ethical standards". She stated that there are 6 Core principles being a journalist.
The Core Principles of Journalists:
Loyalty is to the citizens.
Obligation is to the truth.
Maintain independence from subjects we cover.
Monitor power, be a watchdog of the mass.
Practice highest standards of journalism
 Be ethical.

The second speaker was Ms Love Añover a former Segment Producer of I-Witness. Before she present, she showed us her one of her documentary "Manggagamot". The Manggagamot has 4 part series, the one she showed us is about a man who is somehow a dentist and claiming that God brought him to the world to be a dentist. He doesn't use anesthesia while extracting someones teeth and the patient don't feel any pain. After the documentary, she told us how a journalist's life would be. She said making a documentary needs a lot of research. At first its hard to interview the person. They'll always stick to the budget and she said "Sa calenderia lang kami nakain" then she laugh. She shared a lot of her experience being a journalist. She thought us how to make a documentary is a short period of time.

After lunch time, everyone came back at the theater. The third speaker was Mr. Ed Lingao a multimedia director, PCIJ (Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism). He first said the I.R. has the same principles and then explained how people normally thought about "Investigative Reporting" its not like in the movies. Then he  discussed that I.R. on T.V. is a test on how well you deliver & explain to the common people, and a test of persistence & creativity. Investigative Reporting  should be well researched, document & researched, and rich in content & perspective. In I.R. you should answers the 5W's (Who, What, Where, When, & Why) and H (how), as well as, "so what", "what next" or  the MaPaWeh (Malay ko, Pakialam ko, and Weh, di nga?). In the end he discussed and advice's that "there are no stupid stories, only stupid storytellers" and "News is about CHANGE" and the other two (*sadly I forgot the other two*).

What an Internet Citizen Do

Netizen an active participant in the online community of the Internet.

Netizenship a frequent or habitual user of the Internet. (Blend of Internet and Citizen)

In my view in things, Internet is a big virtual world and we the users are the citizens. As a citizen of the internet we must be responsible on what we're going to post. Words have a big impact on us that scars us and no matter what you do you won't forget it. I want to relate this topic on cyber bullying and social network like Facebook and Twitter. Everyday they have something to talk about in this social sites for example a scandal, a rumor, or  someone you really hate

Our freedom of giving opinions is being abused everyday. I believe that all of us already judge a person its either by there appearance, there attitude or by what they did. They say "What you see is what you get" and I don't believe that is true because you just assumed what happen based on what you saw instead of knowing the whole story.

Today through the use of the internet "What we see/do/know is What we post" for example: "This bitch gave the business to a female security guard. Oddly, no one called her a liar but herself" This was posted on November 13, 2012 by Mohan Gumatay. If you will open the YouTube link below, you can see the comments below. Those are some examples of opinions and judgement on her and to the Philippines  This comments and post are the things we shouldn't do. Imagine how she's going through when it happened to her when it became viral in YouTube and Facebook  it became the "pinag uusapan ng bayan". Her face & name was all over the news, in Facebook  and in Twitter; yet no one even bother to know what the whole story is they just judge what they saw in that 1 min. video.

What is right and what is wrong. This are the dos and don'ts. You should do this and you shouldn't do that. WE all know the right and wrong but do we really understand why? They say "there's nothing wrong of giving opinions" but how come they're not wrong if there hurting someone by there "opinions". We need to be responsible on what we comment or post in the internet, we should be careful on kind of words or phrases are we going to use. Think before we post/comment. When you copy something on the internet, books, news paper, etc. we shouldn't forget to "quote" them and put the source ore reference on who and where did you get the information from.

The Netizenship Pledge
1. Netizens understand that rights are always balanced with responsibilities. 2. Netizens have the right to be respected and the responsibility to respect others, in person and online. 3. Netizens will think before we click. 4. Netizens understand that just because we can, doesn't mean that we should. 5. Netizens will ask for, or receive permission before using the creative work of others and will give credit for and cite this work appropriately when we use it. 6. Netizens will exercise patience and realize that others may not have the same access to and use of the same Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and connectivity as they do. 7. Netizens understand that virtual actions have real consequences for ourselves and for others. 8. Netizens understand that what I/we say and do online can’t be taken back. 9. Netizens promise to use ICTs for the betterment of our world. 10. Netizens promise to use this Netizenship Pledge to guide our actions in person and online.

What's new?

Tradition vs. New Media

What is new media and traditonal mediaor the old media?
NEW MEDIA, On-demand access to content anytime, anywhere, on any digital device, as well as interactive user feedback, creative participation. Another aspect of new media is the real-time generation of new, unregulated content.
TRADITIONAL MEDIA (OLD MEDIA OR LEGACY MEDIA), Traditional means of communication and expression that have existed since before the advent of the new medium of the Internet. Industries that are generally considered part of the old media are broadcast and cable television, radio, movie and music studios, newspapers, magazines, books and most print publications.

From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page

Have you notice when you walk in the mall almost everyone have android or smart phones? You can also notice that most of them are teenagers. Teenagers today always have time for there phones or any gadgets (like laptop, tablets, iPod, iPad, iPhone, Galaxy Note, etc...) Based of on what I have read
Today’s teens spend more than 71/2 hours a day consuming media — watching TV, listening to music, surfing the Web, social networking, and playing video games

 (from: http://articles.washingtonpost.com/2013-03-13/news/37675597_1_teens-cellphones-video-games)

How can the old media survive? What did new media do? New Media is it good or bad to us? Our generation today can easily access almost all the old media on their smart or android phones. Another article that I’ve read says that
The digital revolution threatens to push the traditional newspaper, television, radio, music and advertising industries into the dustbin of history. Newspaper publishers, book publishers, movie studios, music companies, ad agencies, television networks -- they're all trying to figure out how they fit into a new-media world. Their old way of doing business isn't as profitable as it used to be, but they haven't found a new way that's as profitable, either.

Do you think that every bit of this is a good thing or bad thing? We all know the advantages of the new media that is easily access and helpful, especially to students, but what are the disadvantages?

The Disadvantages of the new media:
  •  Books & Newspapers became useless. Now that students like me can easily get the information on the internet, thanks to Google and Wikipedia our lives made easier and lazier.
  • No need to read just copy & paste it, we know what we copy is right because that it’s Wikipedia.
  • Way back then we need teachers to learn how to do the things we don’t know and know the things we never knew but that’s all in the past. Now who needs teachers if we can ask Google what we don’t know and Search “How to do this” on YouTube. Many teens today are self studied. It’s pretty impressive, right? There will come a day teachers are no longer needed.
  • More time for internet and less time for study. It’s too addicting.
  • You can easily be influence by it. It can also lead you too bad things.
  • No more personal interaction. You can interact with her/him through Facebook.

Everything has its own disadvanteges. The most helpful and useful inventions by man kind can destroy our community. Humans were never ever been perfect we made a lot of mistakes.

Life & Communication

Communication (from Latin "communis", meaning to share) is the activity of conveying information through the exchange of thoughts, messages, or information, as by speech, visuals, signals, writing, or behavior. It is the meaningful exchange of information between two or a group of person.

"any act by which one person gives to or receives from another person information about that person's needs, desires, perceptions, knowledge, or affective states. Communication may be intentional or unintentional, may involve conventional or unconventional signals, may take linguistic or nonlinguistic forms, and may occur through spoken or other modes."

Communication requires a sender, a message, and a recipient, although the receiver doesn't have to be present or aware of the sender's intent to communicate at the time of communication; thus communication can occur across vast distances in time and space. Communication requires that the communicating parties share an area of communicative commonality. The communication process is complete once the receiver has understood the message of the sender.
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communication )

How will life be without It?
To communicate, it involves two persons or more (it also involves with animals). There are different ways to communicate:
  1. By Talking & Listening
  2. By Texting,
  3. By Chatting (Facebook, Wechat, Viber, Yahoo Messenger, Line, etc.)
  4. By Emailing
  5. By  Hand Signals / Sign Language
  6. By Sending hand written letters
  7. And many more...

So how will life be without it? There is no life. The whole world will be silent, not a single word herd from someone. When you need help, you can't call someone for help without communicating with someone. Are mouths will be useless, God gave us mouth to speak and communicate. If we live a life without communication, then how will we live.
