Communication: Exploring the Landscape of Investigative Journalism. Last September 01, 2013 we
attended the ICCS convention, it was my first time to attend such event. When I
think of "investigative journalism" my first thought goes to undercover investigation or something like in the movies. Based on Wikipedia
"Investigative
journalism is a form
of journalism in
which reporters deeply investigate a single topic of interest, often involving
crime, political corruption, or
corporate wrong doing".
The way I understand it, its a way to know deeper a certain topic like crime,
political issues, or wrong doings. Its sound interesting because when I think
of it I feel like Sherlock Holmes. Investigative Journalism can be put into
documentaries also called as ID or Investigative Documentaries. Philippines has an
organization called " Philippine
Center for Investigative Journalism" a non-profit media organization specializing in investigative journalism based in Quezon City, Philippines.
Established in 1989 by nine Filipino journalists, the organization funds
investigative projects for both the print and broadcast media and has published
over 400 articles in Philippine newspapers and magazines, produced documentaries and published books on current issues. Now that we
know What "Investigative Journalism" is, I can now tell you what
happen to our ICCS Convention.
It started morning around 9:00am or so. Most of us haven't ate breakfast though we ate snacks along the way. The First Speaker was Marites Danguilan Vitug an editor-at-large, Newsbreak. Her topic was Risks and Ethics. She said in her PPT that "Journalism should make the public understand that bribes are a no-no" and "Editors should be very strict in observing and implementing ethical standards". She stated that there are 6 Core principles being a journalist.
The Core Principles of Journalists:
Loyalty is to the citizens.
Obligation is to the truth.
Maintain independence from subjects we cover.
Monitor power, be a watchdog of the mass.
Practice highest standards of journalism
Be ethical.
The second speaker was Ms
Love Añover a former Segment Producer of I-Witness. Before she
present, she showed us her one of her documentary "Manggagamot". The Manggagamot
has 4 part series, the one she showed us is about a man who is somehow a
dentist and claiming that God brought him to the world to be a dentist. He
doesn't use anesthesia while extracting someones teeth and the patient don't
feel any pain. After the documentary, she told us how a journalist's life would
be. She said making a documentary needs a lot of research. At first its hard to
interview the person. They'll always stick to the budget and she said "Sa
calenderia lang kami nakain" then she laugh. She shared a lot of her
experience being a journalist. She thought us how to make a documentary is a short period of time.
After lunch time, everyone came
back at the theater. The third speaker was Mr. Ed Lingao a multimedia
director, PCIJ (Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism). He
first said the I.R. has the same principles and then explained how people
normally thought about "Investigative Reporting" its not like in the
movies. Then he discussed that I.R. on T.V. is a test on how well you
deliver & explain to the common people, and a test of persistence &
creativity. Investigative Reporting should be well researched,
document & researched, and rich in content & perspective. In I.R. you
should answers the 5W's (Who, What, Where, When, & Why) and H (how), as well as, "so
what", "what next" or the MaPaWeh (Malay
ko, Pakialam ko, and Weh, di nga?). In the end he
discussed and advice's that "there are no stupid stories, only
stupid storytellers" and "News is about CHANGE" and the
other two (*sadly I forgot the other two*).
